Holidaze
CoHo Productions
March 24, 2008
Summary:
Holidaze: a staged reading. That's right! Valory J. Lawrence has done it again! Based on the piece she hammered out during CoHo's January 24Hour Play Festival, Valory is in the process of creating a longer, stronger and more sensical piece. And she wants you to be part of the fun!

Tales of Ordinary Madness

CoHo Productions
January 18 - February 23, 2008
Review by Thursday
Director Stepan Simek's new translation of a quirky well-written Czech play. His style plays up comedy and absurdity of the piece. With exception of sound at times, production was seamless. Inventive design and blocking support and enhance action. All actors' work on this thematically complex script pays off. Don't miss.

24 Hour Play Festival

Coho Productions
January 5, 2008
Review by Followspot
Always a gamble, this 24 hour play festival turned out top notch. Despite an early misfire by Archie Washington, the evening was a success. Alex Helios got just a bit preachy about anorexia, but Dan Chandler and Valory Lawrence created real plays of quality in less than 24 hours. Kudos.

Masterful performances by Vana and Eleanor O'Brien - they play well together and let us in on the fun. Fantastic set; books everywhere! (Though some suspiciously recent for 1990). Script is interesting and powerful, but hampered by a final scene which drags the final argument out about ten minutes too long.

Interview - Dan Trujillo
July 9, 2007
Dan Trujillo’s play JINGLE SPREE at CoHo Productions won a 2007 Drammy Award for Original Script. Originally from Oregon, Dan now lives in Brooklyn, NY.
"A production is never how I envision a play. That’s a good thing."
"I believe in the voice of the play, more than the voice of the writer."
"I love language. I love surprise. I love vulnerability."

From words and wit, Gregory fashions a universe all his own. Not cutting edge, but at times something even more elusive – delightful. Fed on a rich diet of verbal bon bons, we watch our French friends argue, flirt, complain and dream. Despite several strong performances, show falls short of potential.

Sharp cast delivers on dark family tale of responsibility and neglect. Lean narrative starts at top speed, ends in crushing still life of pain and consequences. In act three, beneath a ghostly reminder of one lost moment, Eric Reid and Deanna Wells tighten emotion, intensify impact of deathly serious story.

Is it the obvious script that’s heavy-handed, or simply the barrage of nonstop accent? More conscious of Medea myth relocation than sympathetic of where story was going or its consequences. Nevertheless, some of Vana O’Brien’s best work recently; Gracie Starr is simply gifted. Also notable: Peter Lockhart’s palpable sound design.

Great casting, especially Gary Brickner-Schulz’s oafish Magnus and Gretchen Corbett’s dire Mrs. Drudge. Much comic business, however, just didn’t keep pace, lacking energy and running about 15 minutes too long. When realities collided, sentient overtone was, at first, missing; a quality essential to making this ingenious farce such a tickle.

Intellectual political satire considered quasi-historical power struggle between Kissinger and Nixon on eve of resignation. Dramatic arc wasn’t that steep, but role-playing other political figures was a fun character-building device. Overall, respectable production that hit its marks; played on different generational levels; got audiences talking. Of note: Gary Brickner-Schulz’s Kissinger.

Thoughtful, unsettling thriller punctuated with humor. David Burnett made me shudder as genuinely creepy blind date turned manipulative stalker. Laura Faye Smith, the object of his affection, deftly alternated between strength and vulnerability. Otherwise: untapped tension, maladroit mechanics. Worth seeing, but sit in center section and pardon pace-less scene transitions.

Boston Marriage

Wicked cut and thrust between fashionable lesbian couple in late 1800s Boston had lots of incisive wordplay, though this seething production offered more battle than banter. No wonder these two women sought extra-marital affairs, one with a male “protector,” the other with a young girl ... the two surprisingly related.
