And the Drammy goes to …

2005-2006 Drammy Awards

Portland’s own Drammy Awards will hold its annual celebration of outstanding achievement in local theatre on Monday, June 12 at the Crystal Ballroom (1332 W. Burnside). Doors open at 6 p.m. for social hour; awards begin at 7 p.m., followed by an after-party. Fun, free and open to the public.

Are the minors gonna be imprisoned again?

Come on, isn't anybody going to post some inside tips, some predictions, some gossip? If I had some, I would.

Anonymous said...

I predict. . . that every single Drammy will go to a musical this year. (ha.) Seriously - it was a good year for musicals, and for NEW local talent. I'd be interested in predictions, or at least opinions. . .

Awards to OCT, defunkt, Miracle and Insight Out. Ignored will be ART, Stark Raving, CoHo and Lakewood.

I think this may be the year ART takes home one or two of the really big awards. I'm thinking for Bug and Assassins, their two "studio" shows. I foresee Third Rail, InsightOut, Stumptown, and Miracle not leaving the night empty handed. And wouldn't it be nice if Third Floor actually won an award? It's about time the kind of work they do gets recognized as a legitimate form of art to be appreciated for it.

Actor Andres Alcala. Actress Valerie Stevens.

Predictions are fun, but let's also hear why -- what made these people and plays special?

I'm not doubting any choices here -- just wanna highlight and celebrate what made these performances and productions so good.

Third Rail did receive a couple awards last year, i believe.

Anonymous said...

Third Rail did, but not Third Floor ... two different groups

"Dirty Story" and "City of Gold" -- both really got me thinking.

"A Thought about Raya" was so different then anything I've seen in Portland.

In alphabetical order, going down the list of plays you reviewed, the ones that stand out for excellence to me are:

A Lie of the Mind
A Thought About Raya
Bug
Dirty Story
Kindred
Redwood Curtain
The Lonesome West
Urinetown

Also, I think Profile deserves some sort of mention for their great efforts to bring playwrights to town and enage them with the community each year. Anyone who got to see the discussion with Circle Rep founders at PSU knows how special and valuable that was.

Aside from actual shows, those two days with Wilson, Mason and others was easily the theater highlight of the season for me.

Predictions...
At least two awards to designers at Miracle. At least one acting award to a cast member of Clean.

And an award for Andy Alcala for nearly anything he did this season!

What about Ron Daum the musical theatre "everyman"? I saw him in no less than 5 shows this season including Stumptown's Urinetown, PCS Fantasticks, The Guild's Pajama Game (which he also directed) and Broadway Rose Theatre's Chicago (where he was THE BEST Amos Hart bar none) and he was never less than amazing. It's time this Trooper (trouper) was given his due.

A Thought About Raya isn't eligible this season...but will be next year so stay tuned.
And yep, the minors will be separate from the nonminors again...the OLCC you know...

Anonymous said...

Do they notify minors if they are nominated?

Anonymous said...

My predictions are: Kurt Conroyd and Andy Alcala for "Clean", maybe "Clean" will pick up best "Ensemble"? Designers and Director from Miracle. I think Tim True will not leave empty handed.

Anonymous 1:28 and all: The locally produced elements of "A Thought About Raya" were, in fact, considered in this season.

I think we've got the full list of shows posted now at www.drammy.info, though if someone spots a production they think is missing (or misspelled or whatever), please call it to our attention.

Speaking of the Drammy Web site ... After the ceremony next week, we'll also be updating the slide shows with photos from award-winners and the season in general.

What about NWCT? They had a great season this year. But then it's only a kids theater.

Please, folks, let's stay on topic. Thanks.

I think NWCT could possibly get some tech awards for Frankenstein, Frog and Toad and/or Seussical and maybe an acting award for Wrestling Season or Seussical.

I have to respond to the comment about Northwest Children's Theatre only being a kid's theatre. Yes, it is theatre for children and mostly cast with children and young adults, but I must say isn't that important, and great that young people are involved in theatre, that maybe they will continue on in the arts and keep that torch going? I hope they do receive some awards because what OCT and NWCT do is very important for our community.

Please, everyone, save the rumor grist for over late-night frosty beverages. Thanks.

I consider it 'meat and potatos' theater, but I have a soft spot for NWCTC's "In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer," perhaps the best work this unpretentious company has done. Of course, I was in it.

You gotta love a theater that puts as many actors on stage as there are seats in the auditorium. You gotta.

Even though Arts&Lectures dissolved his position,I think Howard Arron should be recognized for creating Verb. The 2 seasons of short stories adapted for the stage gave us for the most part great liturature and teriffic performances in an often misunderstood genre.

Looking over the list of plays considered this year for the Drammy's, I'm chagrined at the amount of things I meant to see but did not. However, of what I did see, these two shows stand out, and they haven't been mentioned: defunkt's Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights, and Fever Theater's Mitlaufer. Both shows used the skills & resources of the companies well, and took me on interesting (and very different) journeys.

I could be snarky and say which shows I think should BY NO MEANS get an award, but I won't.

Anonymous said...

Ooh, please do!

Anonymous said...

who I'd like to see win somthing: Assasins, Seussical the musical, Frankinstine, Wrestiling Season, and the Giver (Ryan Stathos as Jonas) gave a great perfromance.

what were the deleted posts regarding? Just wondering... I have a feeling it had to do with NWCT or something related to?

The comments that were removed were off-topic speculations inappropriate for this thread about the Drammys and the honoring of artists and productions over the past season. Enough said.

As always, I'd like to see the drammy committee figure out how to give an award to the stage managers and backstage crew. Lots of talent there, working hard to make the show run. Realizing if they are doing their job well they are 'invisible', still wish something could be done.

Anonymous said...

amen to that!

Anonymous said...

i nominate jim crino as an outstanding stage manager.

Anonymous said...

I give a double vote to Tamara Carroll and Nicole Gladwin for Outstanding Stage Management

Anonymous said...

I agree that the theatre techs deserve recognition for all their hard work! Nicole G is amazing...and I would like to add Emilea Rivera to the list as well. Not only is she a cool headed stage manager, but she's a brilliant costumer as well!

Anonymous said...

I suggest everyone buy a stage manager and/or crew member a drink tonight.

Anonymous said...

so . . . who won!?

followspot said...

For a list of winners, check the Drammy Web site at www.drammy.info.

And then check the Drammy site again later this week for updated slideshow of productions photos from last season.

And soon as it's available, the Drammy site will also publish the rebroadcast schedule on local cable access television (thank you to Portland Community Media TV), as well as a link to photos from the ceremony, too!

Seriously people, where were my "stage managers rock" drinks? Only two of you stepped up.

Just kidding, thanks for the shout out.

Anonymous said...

word, nicole. no drinks were bought in honor of my overwhelmingly super-special stage-managing, neither! must i continue to endure obscurity AND sobriety for my art.....?

unlike nicole, i'm not kidding. i will accept my drink anytime before the next drammys....

=-)

Anonymous 09:25:18, I think that the most practical way that the committee could recognize stage managers is to announce their names with the award winners for Outstanding Direction and particularly for Outstanding Production. "Outstanding Director, Directy McDirectorson for Showy Show, stage managed by Stagey Managerson." No statue necessary, but an official shout out and a name up on the slide.

I used to argue that neither award could be won without a solid stage manager, but Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights proved me wrong, as they did a fabulous job without one.

Anonymous said...

Tamara, you are so on. I'm buying you a drink next time I see you.

Dan: So taking you up on it!

Re: Recognising SM's (apart from the whips and various leather accoutrements); I agree that it's virtually impossible to assess, from any sort of committee's standpoint, excellence in stage-managering. The only people who really know what the SM has done is the director, cast, and production team. If the people who worked with the SM could somehow nominate or vote for the recognition of their SM, either individually or as a cast/designer team, then maybe just their names could be read or something. I mean, this would probably put me out of a job and all, but....

ps. nicole, i totally just had my name legally changed to stagey mcmanagerson...
