Following the direction of Olga Sanchez

Interview by Follow Spot (pdf)
November 2005

Her aesthetic is inspired by work she’s seen in Latin America, where theatre is physical, musical, poetic, entertaining. And when it’s outstanding, it is not only fun, but also holy, a redemptive experience we use to understand the unknown and to build community. This is the direction of Olga Sanchez.

I've done some of my best work for Olga. She is brilliant and generous. What a pleasure for PDX to see so much more of her work!

Between James Moore and Olga Sanchez, you've now interviewed the two sexiest people in Portland theater! Who will be next....?

it will probably be me. i'm dead sexy.

Portland theatre's filled with fascinating people. No matter who's next, you won't be disappointed.

I liked Olga's optimistic but critically-acute approach to Portland theater, as she expressed herself in this interview. I think her optimism is not only more productive than my own, somewhat too-frequent pessimism, but a more accurate reflection of the health of Portland theater, too.

Thank you for these interviews. I think that this series may help focus and develop our aspirations for local theater.

Olga is by far one of the most generous and caring directors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Her insight and commitment to all the elements to create a cohesive piece is somethig to not only watch but participate in. If you have not yet had the joy of working with her, I suggest that you do and soon! Here's to a great director and a great friend!

I definitely agree with Siouxsie, Olga is one of the most talented and giving directors I've ever worked with. I'm so glad I had the chance to work with her before I left Portland. Just an amazing person.

Olga, you've got quite a fan club.

Sure, we're just a "fan club" now, but someday we hope to be a legitamite harem...

Olga is one the most interesting and emotionally complex person I've ever met. A true Scorpio. Lots and lots of layers & dimensions even she isn't familiar with yet. Luckily, for her, her actors, crew and audiences, she has a lot of life left to live it out. It will only increase her depth.

I personally know how she throws her heart and soul into ANY work she I have seen her do and has a work ethic like no other! (But when she takes her work into the the restaurant when we go for dinner while waiting for our meal, that's when I draw the line.)

Yes, t'is I who knows her "dark side" best and I am very often witness the tearful, or tormented work frustrations she sometime feels. She is never unwilling to settle for anything, but the best of her own personal ability and honestly, she gets a little hard on herself up when something misses the mark. (Usually all it takes it a little change of perspective to set things to right.)

If she were in any field of endeavor other than theater, I believe she'd be a super highly paid exec, she's just that exacting and driven with herself. So from that alone, you can know for a FACT she does this entirely for love. It's totally clear.

All you people and the work you do with her is a joy to her. She loves being a part of the work; the message she hopes to bring through you and last but not least, she truly does love you all for the effort, dedication and willingness to explore you bring to a stage with her.

P.S. I found her first and I won't share, so no harems!
