Anna in the Tropics

Portland Center Stage
November 20, 2004

Great expectations led to great disappointment in vacuous staging of Nilo Cruz’s sensual, Pulitzer-winning story of 1929 Florida cigar factory lector. Attractive but cavernous set perfectly exemplified this production’s hollow passion in which poetic playwright’s essential lyricism, vivacity and humanity evaporates into thin air. Tip to PCS: size does matter.

I disagree, I thought it was the best show I'd seen in PDX in a long time. Thought the set and acting were beautiful.

Sadly, this production was less -- much less -- than it could or should have been. The beauty of Mr. Cruz writing was lost -- both on the cast and the vast set. The recent production of Cruz' Lorca in a Green Dress at Miracle Theatre showed how Cruz' work should be done.
