JAW: On The Nature of Dust by Stephanie Timm

Portland Center Stage
July 26, 2009

Review by peanutduck

A precise, deliberated, tightly-structured (in retrospect, bordering on cold) adventure that queries: What do you do when your daughter transforms into a chimpanzee and, gradually, a sunfish? How do you fit the unknowable into your religious and/or scientific schematic? Ingenious situation, sharp dialogue make fresh oft-explored coming of age drama.

Just saw this play last night in Seattle. Engaging. The actors were well cast. The ideas of communication between individuals, especially the relationship between mother and teenage daughter - as different species (literally). The sweetness of the conclusion that to really love someone you have to be willing to let them go was managed without being saccharine.
Tears from the cast and the audience.

I recommend.
