Dylan Hillerman's Grand Guignol

Third Eye Theatre
June 26 - August 1, 2009

Review by peanutduck

Pre-intermission plays struggle to activate plot lines that fulfill Grand Guignol’s sexual, violent tradition. Post-intermission plays by David Ian and Ira Kortum thrill as sex, blood, creepiness combine with complexity, psychological depth; and have stronger actors, particularly Kale Arndt. The seductive, coolly aloof Mistress of Ceremonies, Tana Miller, a highlight.

Tana rocks!

And while the whole show was great there was nothing particularly complex about post-intermission. While it was hilarious and scary, stop foolin'... Dylan's play was quite complex, which is why you should have seen it more than once, as it was a show favorite by people who design microchips at Intel...as about as complex as you get around here. Maybe you couldn't get past the swearing, which made sense considering the characters where low-lifes.

"Pre-intermission plays struggle to activate plot lines that fulfill Grand Guignol’s sexual, violent tradition."

I didn't see any struggle, other than a porn-star struggling to escape her cybernetic captors.

It is the structure of the Grand Guignol to start slow and draw you into the world during the first couple acts! They set the foundation for Acts 3 and 4. It simply wouldn't be as intense if it wasn't for the subtlety and restraint of the first comedy and horror plays. All the other reviews I heard on acts one and two... "It was confusing at first, then it snapped together at the last minute." -many audience members at the Vertigo Pub. The first two acts, with Tana's help DID fulfill the sexual and violent tradition, 100%. Many other folks who know the genre agree (Ask anyone in the Portland haunt-zombie-walk-horror community). How many Grand Guignols have you seen? Kale Arndt was in Dylan's horror play during act one. So, was Kale better than himself...? Greg Begoni's performance in "Silicone Death Cult" was one of the best stage baddies I've EVER seen in Portland, period. -Mike Barski

Hi Mike,

I appreciate your well-considered response and point of view. This is one of those cases where we'll have to agree to disagree.
