Hamlet

Quintessence
Guest Review

Simply excellent text work. Why muddy it up with complicated, confusing and ultimately pointless flashback concept? “To Be Or Not To Be” as dialogue - simply a bad choice. Intriguing, unexpected Hamlet by Stephan Henry. Debbie Hunter as Ophelia is trying too hard and seems to be merely playing at madness.

Top notch articulation. Clarity of each word achieved. Acting: pedantic. Henry’s Hamlet is likable, but gesticulation abounds. Follow Shakespeare’s perceptive counsel and stop “sawing the air.” The physical demonstration of every line is unnecessary at best, horribly irksome at worst. Lines rushed by all. Poetry missed. What good is understanding it if you cannot enjoy it?

I don't understand this company. A few years ago, I saw a Macbeth I thought was riveting - coherently directed, designed (especially the score) and the acting was often moving. So my hopes were high for Hamlet. But this production was really, well, boring. "Pedantic" seems right on the money.
Why make a book out of a great play?

Simple answer: different director.
