Buried Child

Third Eye Theatre
Posted by Followspot March 22, 2007; closes April 14, 2007

This script won a Pulitzer? Perhaps the nearly-30 years since has stilted its stun. Production has traces of hope, but complexity thinned, tone flat. What’s missing is ultimately what’s compelling, for audience and characters: What ties these people here and now, saying what they’re saying; more importantly, silent and immobile?

"This script won a Pulitzer?"

Yeah. It did. It's one of the best plays ever written. Sounds like the production didn't reach you, for whatever reason, but, seriously, its those kind of snarky comments that sometimes make me want to give up theatre.

Shepherd isn't for everyone.
Did you like beer the first time you tasted it?

Y'know, I've seen two poor reviews of this play and what's bothering me is that is was a good show. I saw it last Friday. Not great, not innovative, but cool. The actors fit the characters like gloves, the cast had a great sense of balance between funny and creepy, and the set gets all messed up by the end of the show. Maggie didn't deserve to be singled out in the paper as hard as she did (its only theater everyone; we're not curing cancer). GOOD WORK THIRD EYE! Don't let the critics get you down. At least you guys are trying to make a living doing something you love, which is more than I can say for the "keystone cops of the stage" at the Willy Weak and the Portland Smirk-ury.

Sam Shepard isn't beer. He's peyote.

"One of the best plays ever written" may be a stretch.

Many past Pulitzer plays seem underwhelming now.

Shepherd is an interesting guy, no doubt.

Yeah, don't worry about critics. It's theater, which seems to mean a self indulgent exercise in mutual congratulation. Go team, your great, everyone who wants you to do better is bitter and stupid. The 70's and 80's rule!

I'd bet everything I own and my families too that no one in this town could write a play that even sniffs Shepherd...certainly not the folks slammin his work.

Also, the Village Voice wannbee's in this town are like FOX NEWS ignore them..don't read them and they'll go away. They can tell you where to find some decent music but they KNOW NOTHING AT ALL about theatre-- everyone who actually knows theatre knows that!

heh - not knowing this play before - i didn't realise the title was so literal ... and why does the girl stick around and get so intimately, immediately involved? maybe the reasoning is there and just wasn't clear in this production, but if it were me, boyfriend or not, I'd get the hell out of there....
