Is process more important than product?

A Backstage blogger says PBS covered wonderful experiences of Alvin Ailey collaborative choreography project, but didn’t include its resulting mediocre performance. She says, “Any artist will tell you that the process of art-making is far more important than its product, but does that mean the product merits no attention whatsoever?”

Educators may agree, too, and children’s theatres may face this quandary more than anyone. But it also brings to mind a larger question that has come up repeatedly this past season: How can a theatre company help audiences find appreciation – and value – in the process as well as the product?
