O Lovely Glowworm

Portland Center Stage
April 6, 2005

Maybe antihistamines clouded my perception, but a goat and a mermaid amid Dublin rubbish heap are good signs that PCS will risk imagination to find its voice. While this production didn’t blow me away emotionally, it did leave me with lots of imagery and ideas upon which to dwell intellectually.

O Lovely Glowworm is one of my VERY FAVORITE plays that I have ever seen! I LOVED IT! Its just a hilarious, simple, beautiful message about life's little pleasures wrapped into a story about a man who desperately wants to invent the toilet, a man who loves his trousers, a man who is in love with a mermaid, a mermaid who knows quite a lot about engineering, a taxidermist, an elevator operator, and a unicorn, and it is all narrated by a goat who longs to be a trolley-car driver and admires a glowworm and lives in a trash heap. It was everything a play should be, and I am so glad to have seen it!
