anonymous comment! Ooooh I can say anything I want because I am anonymous. It gives me the perfect opportunity to be snarky and condescending.

I hate you followspot.

But I love odd couple (haven't seen it yet, but i hope to)

Wow. Why be a hater?

If you hate followspot, what are you doing here?

THIS VENUE JUST GOT AXED.
SHUT DOWN.
TERMINATED.

Care to elaborate?

As of yesterday:

It was supposed to survive until the end of the month; hey all caps: do you know something to the contrary?

Per the Kingstad website, looks like the show is still a go!

Anonymous said...

yes, but the venue is no more,
after that.

That's a far cry from the yelling of "axed", "shut down" and "terminated" considering it was (literally) yesterday's news.

Somebody's keyboard goes to 11...

dear jeff:
to say something is terminated is a fact whether it be effective immediately or whether it be effective in a year.
the fact is still a fact.
the termination is still a fact.
SEE WHAT I MEAN?
your humble fellow poster.

I think the difference here is whether the show is shut down or the facility is shut down. From the original posting announcing the shut down, I assumed the show was dead as well, but apparently that isn't the case. It's a shame we're losing another space, given that we have a shortage of them, but it's kind of unfair to possibly mislead people into thinking the run is over.

hence the use of the word "venue"
instead of "production" or "show."
seems as though if anyone reads the paper or wants to see the show, the announcement that the venue is shut would actually invigorate ticket sales by folks who don't want to miss the show.
why is it i wonder that posters here tend to nick pick non issues to the death.
it is really a waste of time for all.
and frankly, having seen the show, "the odd couple", if you miss this one, you have merely saved yourself a couple hours of your life that you could be spending on something worthwhile.

I AGREE.
Having seen it also, it is mostly unwatchable, save the delightful
Rosalind Fell as Gwendolyn.
Sadly, she is not onstage for the whole play.
I look forward to her next appearance.

I've been a producer.
Everything matters.
Every little thing.
Every little thing can throw off a production.
Hence a carelessly phrased sentence can lead people to beleive a show has closed.
No longer available.
Spend their money elsewhere.
Really.
Really, really.
Which is to say, it's a serious bummer to put months of work into a show, and then have the thing blown because of uncontrollable outside events. A lot of people with busy lives will look at a note like "VENUE CLOSED" and think the show's dead. Naturally, if they want to see badly enough, they can check it out, but there are lot of other shows out there, and they just might move on. That's not a nit to pick--it's a valid criticism as the adverse publicty can lead to a loss at the box office.
That's what I was trying to say.
Even though I tried to say it in prose.
And not free verse.
Really.

well luckily you have set the record straight on the "carelessly phrased sentence"
and now the masses can flock to this show.
i guess if the phrase were truly damaging in its misrepresentation, the blog master would have axed it.
i think personally you are putting way too much power in followspot.
to tell ya the truth, when i read in the oregonian that the space was no more, i assumed the show was closed.
nowhere did it say they were closing out the run as planned.
i am pretty sure that followspot does not reach the same numbers as the O.
which is to say, about a million readers.
well, splattworks, i certainly hope (and assume really) that you have personally contacted everyone you know to tell them that they can still see the odd couple.
that it is not too late.
and furthermore that's what i would do if i were in any way associated with the show.
and again, it seems to me that this would probably generate more activity towards sales than had the "careless" sentence appeared at all.
just sayin.

Followspot,
it remains
useful,
informative,
but the comments
alas
have jumped
the shark.

whatever the hell that means.

The problem with blogs is that any anonymous fool can spout without credentials. It used to be someone had to have some knowledge of theater to be a critic. When you say that the show is a waste of time or unwatchable, are you referring to the story or the performance? What about the understated, dry humor of Oscar? Or the fact that the poker buddies in the movie had no personality and were interchangeable, but in the play, they had distinct identities? Do you have any knowledge of the subject or are you one of those guys who lives in his grandmother's basement, downloading pictures of comic book women and sci-fi heroes, just saying that you didn't pay attention, but you thought one of the girls was cute?

Sorry to disappoint, 5:44, but i have been around the theatre in both academic venues and union venues for some 3 decades.
i have seen theatre on 4 continents and 2 islands.
i vote in the SAG awards.
i have met neil simon. he's a nice guy.
but yes, i agree with you, any fool can rip a show on here -- credentials or not.
(though for the record, i said it was "mostly unwatchable" and someone else said it was a "waste of time" not i)
i am sorry i hurt your feelings though.
i am not saying folks did not do some good work.
but taken as a whole, taken as something that has been done before, it was not what i felt was a credit to the art of theater or the playwright.
and my grandmother is dead.
and i don't like comic books.
i don't like basements.
and i did not say rosalind fell was
"cute" -- i said she was delightful.
for a self-righteous whiner, you sure don't pay attention to the facts very well.
instead of spending your time defending (your?) work, why not pursue what you love and get better at it?
lastly, you'll note that the comments you take exception to came out an argument over the post about the venue closing.
it seems that neither of these negative comments would have come to the fore, were it not for the guy who went all ballistic over the guy who wrote VENUE AXED.
i trust the show has closed by now.
let it rest.
