A Sunbeam

PassinArt
April 3 - 25, 2009

Review by peanutduck

Contrived and laborious, A Sunbeam attempts to pull heartstrings with story of mother’s obsessive, guilt-ridden love for special needs son, but gets lost in overabundance of questions, issues, eye roll-worthy last-second revelations. Spiritless production plodded monotonously, as if burdened by subtext. Happy surprise: Kim Bogus’s performance as socially awkward psychologist.

Kim Bogus has always been one of my favorites.

Really? I've never seen her be good in anything.

Really? She's been around for about 15 years and to my mind is always at the least, competent, and at the best, intriguing.

Kim is just as wonderful off-stage as on.

Spiritless? In what way? I felt the actors and direction took a subject matter that should be discussed and brought it to light with out being preachy. And if you are going to compliment an actor a backhanded one leaves much to be desired...

i took s.kelsey as a sincere poster.

not back handed at all.

I meant no offense. Yikes! Tough crowd!

To extend "spiritless" I didn't believe the actors/characters most of the time or sense a relationship among them. It felt mechanical. I think the "backhanded" comment was for me. While my comment about Kim Bogus was not intended as such, I can appreciate how it could be interpreted that way.
