A Murder is Announced

New Century Players **Photo credit: Eric Griswold**
October 31 - November 8, 2008

Summary:

The announcement in the local paper states the time and place of a murder to occur in Miss Blacklock's Victorian house. The victim is not one of several occupants, temporary and permanent, but an unexpected and unknown visitor. What follows is a classic Christie puzzle. Play directed by Kevin Yell.

You know, I can't recall the last time I ever went to see a show based on the director. I can tell you that I have seen many shows based on the strength of the actors in the cast. It's puzzling to me that theatres still credit the director in their press releases and often fail to mention the actors involved. No offense to meant to Kevin Yell (he may very well be a very fine director), but I don't know him or his work and his name alone isn't going to inspire me to rush out to get tickets.

You know, folks . . . this would be a whole lot nicer place if so many of you didn't look for every opportunity to point out something that's uncool, or displeases you, here on the blog or on Portland stages in general. The folks who try to keep the rest of us informed of their projects are actors and techies just like us, not professional marketers, and they do the best they can. How about just asking "hey, I'd like to know who's acting in this one"?

You're right! Let's overlook every stupid thing that theatres constantly do and settle for a mediocre entertainment industry in this town! It'll make it just that much more appealing to watch television instead.

If the original announcement being complained about here were a press release to the general public, you might have more of a point. But for a blog of, by, and for Portland actors, directors, and techies, it's simply another example of what anonymous 10/28 was talking about. If we saw as many posts to this forum that took the trouble to noted what works (in thoughtful detail, not just mindless cheerleading) instead of crowing about what's wrong, then you might also be on firmer ground.

I am happy to report that I tried to see this show tonight and they were sold out. For a community theatre that is trying to grow in Milwaukee I say congratulations.
