Einstein is a Dummy

Oregon Children's Theatre
May 4 - 18, 2008

Summary:

A fictional day in the life of Albert Einstein as an awkward twelve year old. Einstein struggles with all the usual issues of a pre-teen: keeping up with violin lessons, impressing the girl next-door and, oh yeah, comprehending the fundamental relationship of space and time to the speed of light.

Saw this show this weekend; what fun! Probably best suited for middle schoolers and above. Great cast! Tons of energy, but focused too. David Cole is amazing. He perfectly encapsulated young Einstein's chaotic, driven energy. A real triple threat; truly rare. Amazing performance from an amazing young actor. The young lady who played Elsa was charming; what a beautiful voice. Overall, lots of fun in under an hour.

A Must see! Loved it! Original! Progressive. Funny and moving! An ode to children's creative process and love of learning. My seven year old was entranced and now wants to learn more about science. The songs...especially the E=Mc2 song is fantastic, both as energy and physics.

I saw it too. Funny and enlightening. My wife, and I and eight year old son went and I have to say I was very impressed. Creative and subversive in a good way. Science rocks.

My family and I were delightfully surprised when we saw David in the program. I took my daughter (6 yrs old at the time) to go see Michael Allen Harrison's Velveteen Rabbit in '04, and then we were impressed by David. Now OCT brings him back and puts an amazing cast (and show, great job guys!) behind him...I smell another drammy...

David Cole can do no wrong here as young Albert...I've seen him in numerous shows in the past few years, and I definitely think he's been underused, but am glad to see him in another starring role. His voice is as magical as the show itself. I wouldn't be surprised if he nabbed another drammy for this show. Another actor I was pleasantly surprised by was newcomer James Pace, the cat. He had great energy, was very enthusiastic, articulate, and his facial expressions were to die for. The actress who played Elsa, did have quite the beautiful voice. I would suggest rounding up the whole family and taking them to this wonderfully delightful show!

Amazingly dynamic, quirky, and funny. Why can't this show be extended? Why wasn't children's theater this exhilirating when we were kids? Great cast, story, and music. I don't have kids but I decided to go based on your reviews and the fact that this piece is written by the same woman who wrote (the very adult) MARIELA IN THE DESERT at Miracle, which is the most interesting, moving haunting play I have seen in Portland. Wow.
