Albert Herring

Portland Opera
March 14-30, 2008

Summary:

Benjamin Britten’s rollicking comic chamber opera actually is all about the search for a great woman—the perfect May Queen. Alas, alack however, in this rural English village, there’s no fittingly chaste young woman to be found . . . at least according to Lady Billows, who lords it over the entire town.

read about this show in the northwest reverb. heard it was a 'smashing success' so i thought i'd check it out. went to see it on the 24th and loved it. never thought i'd like opera all that much, but there was so much theater involved, i didn't even notice the music much, until the part at the end where nine or ten of the characters sang this kind of funeral march thing (someone called it the threnody or something like that?). it was actually really beautiful, even though my thing is good ol' rock 'n' roll, not classical stuff. guess you can't be too critical of things before you actually know what their all about. i feel bad for anybody who missed this show....it really rocked. lots of locals in it too, and the acting was superb. for an opera, that is. lol
