Believers
Fever Theatre
January 17 - February 2, 2008
Review by Thursday
Collaborative, cult-related show falls somewhere between theatre and performance art. Site specific; requires audience participation from most. Excellent integration of acting, singing, music, and dance. Somewhat episodic. Not quite sure what they were trying to do, although it does hold attention. Dress warmly, but comfortable shoes not necessary. Interesting evening.

First moments were intense and beautiful. Afterwards, enjoyable enough but gradually it becomes clear no transformative experience is coming. Then the meta-theatre bomb explodes and it just seems awkward. Improvisation is great, but as practiced here it prevents the creation of higher meaning. Without a higher purpose they're just talented people showing off; impressive, but a theatre-church it ain't.
I actually thought the piece took off when the meta-theatre bomb hit, and they stopped showing off. I'd like to see where they take it, see if they can push that into a genuinely transformative experience. It's very close.
