Give yourself some props

This is silly, but someone said yesterday they hate bananas. Later, I thought, “But, wait, bananas are the best prop — they’re so multifunctional! And they’re always hilarious!” Granted, funny props do not a good show make, but it begs the question, if only for laughs: What are the funniest props?

I don't even know how to answer that. Any prop properly used (or prop-erly used) is the funniest prop. For the ultimate proof, watch Jonathan Winters.

And for proof that even funny props, if improperly used, can lose their funny, watch Carrot Top.

...though a stuffed animal being treated as an live pet... that cracks me up.

The current 3rd Floor show uses a stuffed kitten as a real one. And then it's killed hilariously. Spencer Conway is too strong for his (and the cat's) own good.

The 3rd Floor has a long history of very funny props. (Proppy costumes, too...I remember a man with a beet for a head and a giant talking doughnut.)

Jonathan Winters? How about Jonathan Walters, as in the director of the now-infamous banana climax of "City of Gold" .... and subject of Followspot's profile o'the month.

If you've seen Jonathan Winters prop specific work, then I'm sure you know what I mean. My point was that any prop can be funny - from a banana to a stick to an anything... He would take any random object from the audience and improvise ten hilarious minutes with it.

I didn't in any way mean to disparage Portland prop use - I'll see the banana Saturday :)

All right - I'll expand it to include everyone whose name fits the form: Jonathan W__ters.

Jonathan Winters may be the funniest "riffer" in the history of riffs. Treat yourself and watch anything he ever did on black-and-white television.

Thank you, Darius, for including the infamous Jonathan Wooters. He did a thing with a nine-iron and a saddle that you wouldn't believe.

But the all-time funny prop?
Watermelon. Sledgehammer. 'Nuff Said.

A Moose Head...that was used in Ashlands "Room Service" last season.

Does that mean that Jonathan
W(Carrot Top)ters is funny and a good user of props. Not to dwell on CT, but I'm pretty sure he's funnier than...anyone!

To Anonymous 11:25. Why post anonymously? This forum allows us an opportunity for free and open debate. People often say they post anonymously to protect themselves and their careers from backlash against their opinions. I promise that no one will hold your appreciation of Carrot Top against you. It's only Carrot Top. What? I'm not gonna cast you in a comedy because you think CT is funny? Unveil yourself, sir or madam. Reveal your love of Carrot Top to all.

What? A good old-fashioned seltzer bottle isn't good enough for you young folk?
