Northwest Classical Theatre Co.
December 22, 2005; closes January 14, 2005
Classic (read: dated) murder-mystery problematic to stage effectively for modern audiences — intrigue shallow as characters, creating grave directorial challenge: follow museum-piece reality? or find new, perhaps offbeat, style? Acting-by-stage-directions production didn’t unravel sufficient suspense to raise hackles, far less solve rewarding climax. Shoebox space, however, cozy addition to Portland venues.
Which space is that?
ReplyDeleteNorthwest Classical Theatre Co. is performing at the Shoebox Theatre, 2110 SE 10th Ave.
ReplyDeleteIt's a couple blocks east of the #4 Division bus line if you get off at SE 7th and Harrison (I believe). Looks like it was a hole-in-the-wall cafe or restaurant until recently: a long (maybe 80-foot?), narrow "foyer" with a couple booths, then the "theater" space which measures 20 x 40, if memory serves, and maybe 30 seats or fewer on a small riser). Can't imagine what it would have been used for in its earlier incarnations. Truly a "shoebox" if anything ever deserved the name.
ReplyDeleteI thought I'd heard from someone sometime that it had been a private screening room.
