ReplyDeleteI wonder if Profile theatre will ever choose a non-Caucasian playwright?
ReplyDeleteNon-Caucasian playwrights tend to write non-Caucasian characters. And Portland's acting pool is extremely white. I can only think of a few minority actors really, but I don't know if this is because there's a limit of available roles from the plays being produced or if there's a genuinely small number of actors available for those roles.

ReplyDeleteInteresting. Let's see... What were sum total of shows produced? Add the number of actors in each show to arrive at available roles - (this could be divided further into Male/Female groupings and further still by age range but for this discussion we'll keep it simple) Total number of roles available - how many were cast with actors of color? As a "Caucasian" (what the hell does that mean anyway?) I find that theaters that continuously produce "Caucasian" shows BORING. They cater to a time that is long past. But it has to be said I've seen MANY changes over the past season where actors "of color" have been in leading roles roles in "Caucasian" productions and have enjoyed those shows immensely! What's particularly interesting is how this issue came up in this thread. Nevertheless, the argument that there is a limited amount of roles available has been disproved by the high quality of the shows - performances that did include actors "of color" in roles that do not dictate nor require the casting of "Caucasian" actors exclusively.

I'm interested in seeing how large the shows with actors of color list really is. I'm referencing the 2008/2009 productions listed here. (because who really wants to know how many actors of color vs available roles - a ridiculous notion!) :p
